Gillian Tafadzwa Chinzete
NATIONAL DIRECTOR
Gillian Tafadzwa Chinzete is a distinguished Zimbabwean human rights leader and the National Director of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights). A strategic and transformative leader, she made history in 2026 by becoming the first woman to head the ZimRights Secretariat in the organisation’s 34-year history.
With over 13 years of extensive experience in civil society, Gillian steers Zimbabwe’s largest indigenous grassroots human rights movement. In this role, she provides strategic direction to the Secretariat, overseeing programmes that empower over 250,000 members across the country’s ten provinces.
Professional Trajectory Gillian’s rise to the helm of ZimRights is built on a track record of high-impact advocacy and grassroots mobilization. Prior to her appointment as National Director, she served as the Programmes Manager, where she oversaw interventions across ZimRights’ eight action zones. She was instrumental in strengthening the national human rights architecture by fostering collaboration between local action committees, independent commissions, and international partners.
She joined ZimRights in 2023, quickly making her mark as a Community Engagement Officer and later as the Regional Manager for the Northern Region. Her tenure was defined by the expansion of civic engagement structures and the successful implementation of the Partnerships for Rights Initiative, which bridged the gap between marginalized communities and statutory human rights bodies.
Previous Experience Before joining ZimRights, Gillian held prominent leadership portfolios in the civil society sector. She served as the Programmes Manager at the Vendors Initiative for Social Transformation (VISET) and as Acting Director at the Institute for Young Women in Development (IYWD), roles that solidified her commitment to defending the rights of vulnerable populations.
Education & Recognition Gillian is an academically accomplished practitioner. She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Governance, a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Peace and Governance, and a Special Honours Degree in Monitoring and Evaluation.
In 2019, her leadership potential was recognised globally when she was awarded the Women and Peace Fellowship by Columbia University (USA). This fellowship honed her feminist leadership skills, which she now applies to lead ZimRights into a new era of inclusive human rights advocacy.
