Gillian Tafadzwa Chinzete
NATIONAL PROGRAMMES MANAGER
Gillian Tafadzwa Chinzete is a distinguished Zimbabwean human rights leader with over 13 years of extensive experience within civil society. She currently serves as the National Programs Manager at the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights), Zimbabwe’s first post-independence indigenous grassroots human rights advocacy group. In this critical role, she successfully coordinates ZimRights programs across all 10 provinces, including the international initiatives under the newly established ZimRights Diaspora Chapter.
Her responsibilities encompass overseeing human rights interventions across ZimRights’ eight action zones and collaborating with the national human rights architecture, which integrates local civil society organizations, independent commissions, and international partners.
Gillian joined ZimRights in 2023 as a Community Engagement Officer and later Regional Manager for the Northern Region. Her leadership in these roles witnessed the expansion of ZimRights’ civic engagement through the creation of several action committees tackling various human rights issues. Through the Partnerships for Rights Initiative, she led engagement with independent commissions and increased direct collaboration between independent commissions and ZimRights communities. Over the years, Gillian rose through the ranks to become the National Programmes Manager.
Before joining ZimRights, Gillian held several prominent leadership roles, including Programmes Manager at the Vendors Initiative for Social Transformation (VISET) and Acting Director at the Institute for Young Women in Development (IYWD).
Gillian is academically accomplished, holding a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Governance, a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Peace and Governance, and a Special Honours Degree in Monitoring and Evaluation. In 2019, she was honored with the Women and Peace Fellowship from Columbia University, which further enhanced her feminist leadership skills, enabling her to lead effectively within the civil society sector.
