ZimRights Stands with Gokwe Amidst Hardships: A Community’s Fight Against Nature’s Fury
The community of Gokwe has been facing unimaginable hardships lately. In January, a series of heavy storms ravaged the area, leaving many homes destroyed and families displaced. And just when they thought things couldn’t get any worse, their fields have now withered away, leaving them without food or income sources. The once lush and fertile fields of Gokwe are now dry and barren, a stark reminder of the devastation that has befallen this community. The crops that once provided sustenance for families have now wilted away, leaving them struggling to feed themselves and their loved ones.
As the people of Gokwe try to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives, the future looks bleak. With no crops to harvest and no homes to return to, they are left wondering how they will survive this unprecedented crisis.
ZimRights conducted a rapid assessment to identify and prioritize vulnerable families based on specific criteria such as single-headed households, persons with disabilities, elderly individuals, and families with young children. Targeted assistance was provided to identified vulnerable families, including financial support, shelter rehabilitation, and access to healthcare services.
An investigation and verification were conducted regarding the reported natural disaster that had struck the Gokwe Nemangwe community. Following the verification, food hampers were distributed to those most severely impacted by the heavy rains. ZimRights identified 12 of the most vulnerable families based on criteria such as disabilities, old age, and widowhood. This approach enabled ZimRights to assist those most in need and lacking support.
The organization delivered essential supplies to the displaced community in Mukuyu village and Kaguta area. Each family received a food package containing essential food items to meet the immediate nutritional needs. Hygiene and sanitation kits were also provided to ensure access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and promote good hygiene practices to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases.
A recipient of the aid, who is also a ZimRights member, expressed gratitude for the assistance. Given the area’s drought challenges, the recipient urged the organization to continue aiding the community, as nearly everyone there requires urgent help.
The gloom and doom that hangs over Gokwe serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of Mother Nature. But through it all, the people of Gokwe remain resilient and hopeful, determined to overcome these challenges and rebuild their community.
