ZimRights continues to strengthen grassroots advocacy through its Community Action Planning Labs, a platform designed to empower citizens to take an active role in promoting and defending their rights.
On February 13, 2025, the latest lab was held in Sanyati District, bringing together local residents, activists, and community leaders to build capacity for civic engagement and accountability.
Addressing Challenges in Civic Space
Zimbabwe’s civic space remains heavily restricted, with citizens often facing intimidation, suppression, and barriers to participating in governance. Marginalized groups, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities, face even greater obstacles in accessing information and holding leaders accountable. The Community Action Planning Lab in Sanyati sought to address these challenges by equipping participants with the knowledge, tools, and strategies needed to navigate and push back against these restrictions.
Key Discussions and Engagement
The session provided an interactive platform where participants examined critical civic and political rights, such as:
✔️ Participation in governance and decision-making – Addressing barriers to attending local council meetings and consultations.
✔️ Freedom of expression and access to information – Discussing fears of victimization and strategies to safely share concerns.
✔️ Freedom of assembly and association – Exploring ways to organize despite political intimidation.
✔️ Electoral rights and political participation – Encouraging young people, especially women, to actively engage in democratic processes.
✔️ Safety, security, and protection from abuse – Identifying risks faced by activists and strategies for legal and institutional support.
✔️ Discrimination and equal rights – Advocating for inclusive spaces where all voices are heard.
✔️ Access to justice and accountability – Addressing police bias, corruption, and barriers to reporting violations.
Participants shared real-life experiences of rights violations, including cases of political exclusion, restrictions on freedom of speech, and challenges in accessing justice. The presence of local duty-bearers allowed for open dialogue, where concerns were raised directly with decision-makers.
Action-Oriented Outcomes
A key outcome of the lab was the development of practical action points aimed at ensuring sustained engagement. These included:
- The strengthening of platforms to keep residents informed of governance meetings and advocacy opportunities.
Commitments from community members to attend full council meetings and demand transparency from local authorities.
By the end of the session, participants expressed renewed confidence in asserting their rights, mobilizing for change, and working collectively to expand civic space in their communities.
