Zimbabwe Human Rights Association International Women’s Day Statement
ZimRights continues to champion women’s rights, challenge discriminatory norms, and advocate for policies that create an equitable and just society
Today on March 08 2024, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD). This annual occasion, observed since 1975, serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made in advancing gender equality and the work that remains ahead. This year’s theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” underscores the critical role women play in shaping sustainable futures.
International Women’s Day has deep historical roots, tracing back to the early 20th-century labor movements. It emerged as a platform for women to demand better working conditions, suffrage, and equal rights. Over time, it evolved into a global celebration that highlights women’s achievements, resilience, and contributions across various fields.
Zimbabwe’s Constitution Amendment 20, section (80) recognizes the rights of women. It states that every women has full and equal dignity of the person with men and this includes equal opportunities in political and economic activities. Section (17) also highlights that the state must promote full gender balance in Zimbabwean society and in particular -the state must promote the full participation of women in all spheres of Zimbabwean society on the basis of equality with men.
The 2013 Zimbabwean Constitution marked a significant milestone in promoting gender equality. It explicitly recognizes gender balance as a national objective, guiding the formulation and implementation of laws and policies.
Section 56(1) of the Constitution ensures equal protection and benefits under the law for all individuals, regardless of gender. Section 246(a) establishes an institutional mechanism to monitor gender equality issues, ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions.
Since 1992 ZimRights has been actively engaging in advocacy campaigns, workshops, and community dialogues to raise awareness about women’s rights and gender equality. We at ZimRights, have been collaborating with other civil society organizations, government bodies, and international partners to amplify the impact of women in society.
ZimRights challenges discriminatory practices and policies that perpetuate gender inequality. We advocate for legal reforms and policy changes to dismantle barriers faced by women. The legal team at ZimRights provides support to women who seek justice for gender-based violence and discrimination.
ZimRights under this year’s theme urges government, CSO’s and other stakeholders to recognize that socio-economic empowerment is crucial for gender equality as it helps enhance women’s access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
ZimRights continues to champion women’s rights, challenge discriminatory norms, and advocate for policies that create an equitable and just society. Our commitment to gender equality aligns with this year’s International Women’s Day theme: “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
