The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission We Want

About the Campaign

Originally established through the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission Act Chapter 10:30 which was promulgated on the 12th of October, 2012, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission in 2013 became one of the Chapter 12 independent Constitutional Commission under 2013 Constitution. Formed following intense advocacy by civil society actors including ZimRights, ZHRC has become one of the critical pillars for promotion of human rights in Zimbabwe. In May 2020, five members of the ZHRC will finish their terms. This has triggered the search for their replacements by the Parliament of Zimbabwe.

On 25 February 2020, the Parliament of Zimbabwe released the call for nomination to the ZHRC. The call closed on 13 March 2020.

On 12 March 2020, ZimRights approached the Clerk of Parliament, and delivered a petition signed by 1006 members of the public, requesting for extension of the deadline for nominations to allow members of the public to participate in the process.

ZimRights believes that the ZHRC is an important commission whose integrity must be everyone’s concern. In that regard, ZimRights members across the country are taking action to ensure that their voices are heard.
